It came as a complete surprise to me, altough I guess I should have known better. My brother emailed me a link to an ABC News story video where they investigated the safety of old …

Cloth Diapers: Not so Green?

Submitted by Trevor Wilson on Wednesday, 22 October 20082 Comments

According to a new study funded by the British government, cloth or reusable diapers may not be so environmentally friendly. According to Marie Woolf, the study showed that reusable diapers had a larger carbon footprint then disposable diapers.

The challenge is that the British counsels have been promoting reusable diapers but now the report does not bear it out like they had hoped. Reports also say the civil servants have been asked to not publicize the report because the government is embarrassed by the finding.

The report found that the energy used in laundering the reusable diapers was the culprit for the bigger carbon footprint.

Marie Woolf wrote:

The report found that while disposable nappies used over 2½ years would have a global warming impact of 550kg of CO2, reusable nappies produced 570kg of CO2 on average. But if parents used tumble dryers and washed the reusable nappies at 90C, the impact could spiral to . 993kg of CO2. A Defra spokesman said the government was shelving plans for future research on nappies.

The report supposedly stated that in order for reusable diapers to be more environmentally friendly they would have to be washed in an extreme way. This would include washing in water less then 140F and be dried outside without the use of a dryer.

Yet, as one commenter said, if you are looking at the personal financial side, then reusable is still cheaper.

Another question I have about all this is how do you compare the difference between cotton growing, cloth making, and all the oil, plastics, and factories used to make disposable diapers?

Sometimes it comes down to convenience and cost to the end user. What are your thoughts on the issue?

I was going to go “green” with my baby, but the thought of dealing with all those poopy diapers kind of turned me off. Seems gross to get into it and scrape all that off into the toilet all the time. Disposables are so much easier. Now with this post, I have something to tell my “green” friends when they get after me for using disposables!

I don’t believe this! It makes no sense to me at all how someone can say that washable diapers are not environmentally friendly.

Forget silly studies like this and use your brains. Water is recyclable, plastics aren’t. Stop filling the world with garbage that will just sit there for years and years and years.
